Welcome to the Punk Rock Orchestra Arrangers Site

Sorry it's not very sophisticated. Here you will find all the information you desire on how to go about arranging for the Punk Rock Orchestra.

Here are the steps

  1. Decide you are going to do it. The Punk Rock Orchestra doesn't currently pay its arrangers. This is an entirely volunteer effort for everyone involved: musicians, management and arrangers.
  2. Find a song - We have a list of recommended ongs. Choose a song you are interested in and let us know. If you are arranging for the orchestra, please stick to the list or consult me if you have questions. The string quintet is currently on hiatus and is not accepting new material. You can see more about our philosphy for choosing songs here.
  3. Begin arranging - We recommend that your instrumentation based both current staffing but and what we intend to have. Don't give solos to instruments we currently don't have unless we can easily make a substitution. Compose your songs for intermediate players unless you are very familiar with the abilities of our current staff.
  4. When you are close to finishing and or are able to set a finish date, let me know when you intend to finish and the intended instrumentation of the piece. I will then slot your piece for a rehearsal.
  5. Once finished, if you are using a scoring tool like Finale or Sibelius, please extract your pieces and make enough copies for our projected staff + 1 for each instrument.
  6. Do not print only enough for our current staff. Print multiple extras and bring 5 copies of the master in on 8 1/2 X 11 and one on 11 X 17.
  7. Please use cautionary accidentals.
  8. Use key signatures sensibly. If something isn't really in a key, don't force it, rather write it in C. Avoid key signature changes.
  9. Please try to keep extracted parts to 3 pages or less. Print out a full master score.
  10. For percussion, place all the following parts on one sheet on separate staves:-
  11. Don't extract brass parts to tenor clef
  12. Vocal Parts should all be extracted to one page. Please use cue notes where appropriate.
  13. Horns read treble clef. Write for two horns.
  14. Euphoniums read bass clef
  15. We now have a bass clarinet and a harp. Please use them.
  16. Please show up to the rehearsals for which you piece is scheduled. If you can't make it, let me know in advance.
  17. If using Sibelius, please fill out all the Score Info about the piece
  18. Please provide a piano reduction
  19. Please provide a midi dump.
  20. Keep in contact. We always want to know what you are up to and what your progress is.
