- When are rehearsals? Where are the rehearsals
Rehearsals are set for every other Sunday afternoon (currently 2nd and 4th of the month) from 6PM-9PM. Rehearsals are currently conducted in San Francisco. If you are unable to make these rehearsals, we will unfortunately not be able to work with you. Also note that our performances tend to start late in the evening (like say 10:00 PM) and end even later so if this is a problem for your schedule, please reconsider joining the orchestra. We perform at least once every two months. Our most demanding schedule was recently, when we performed three time in 3 1/2 weeks. You would not be required to attend all performances, but you should most show up to a brush up rehearsal and all sectionals previous to a performance in order to appear in that performance.
- How do I get involved?
Musicians and vocalists must be classically trained (be able to sight read). We are looking for advanced intermediate to professional level players. The parts are easy for most players, but most parts are not passed out in advance of rehearsal, thus the sight-reading prerequisite. All musicians must first audition. Auditions are held on the 2nd Sunday of every month or by special arrangement. Please contact our personnel manager to arrange an audition. We are currently looking for (but not limited to) the following:
French horn (1),
Viola (1), Violin (3), Contrabass (2). One English horn and one Contrabassoon
would be nice.
Auditions are currently held by appointment. Mondays and Tuesdays after 6:30 and Weekends before noon are the best times, but other times can be arrages. If you have not yet given us your contact info, please write to our personnel manager and send your first and last name, email, phone number and instrument(s) you play.
- How should I prepare for the audition?
You will need to prepare a short classical piece of intermediate difficulty. In addition, you should come prepared to sight read an easy punk arrangement.
- I auditioned. Now what?
We will contact you to tell inform you of your results. You will be added to our listserv and be given oodles of information
- I want to arrange a song. Where do I start?
Please read the arranger's FAQ.
- When are the performances?
Please check our performance schedule
- Are performers paid?
Not in cash but, of course, in other ways. The Institute For Unpopular Culture is a non-profit organization and, as such, is a member of Project 20, which will allow you to work off your San Francisco County Parking tickets. Please contact The IFUC for more details.
- How do I earn college credit?
Work with the orchestra is considered an internship with the Institute For Unpopular Culture. You may be able to enroll in an internship class, either through your department, or through the college or university. Each school differs so check with your school. If you need any help confirming your work with the orchestra, please write to The IFUC for more details.
